Cooking cannot decompose ciguatoxin

The confirmed two went to the Accident and Emergency Department of Pok Oi Hospital for medical treatment yesterday and were admitted to the hospital for further treatment. They are now in stable condition.

The CHP’s preliminary investigation revealed that the fish was purchased from a fish stall in the Yuen Long Bridge Market under the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department.

A spokesperson for the centre said that the department has notified the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department of the incident and the investigation is continuing.

The spokesman said that most people with ciguatera poisoning will recover without long-term sequelae, but excessive intake of toxins can affect the circulation and nervous system, and cooking cannot decompose the toxins in fish.

According to the center, ciguatoxin food poisoning is not uncommon in tropical areas. It is mainly related to eating large coral fish. It means that these large fish will eat small fish in coral reefs, while small fish eat poisonous seaweeds, so toxins accumulate in large corals. The appearance of fish, especially the internal organs, is not easy to distinguish whether it contains toxins.

The center recommends that the public reduce their consumption of fish in Lake Shan, even if they eat, they should avoid eating heads, skins, internal organs and roe, because toxins accumulate in these parts.
