Student leader Lesther Alemán, founder of the University Alliance in Nicaragua, talks to CNN about his experience as an activist under the regime of President Daniel Ortega, in the context of recent political tension. Alemán believes that the country lives under a dictatorship and that for citizens like him who protest against the system there are only two destinations: jail or death. "I have a guillotine over my head (...) but I am not afraid of what may happen to me because I am determined that I will do the impossible and go to the end so that Nicaragua is free," he said in an interview with Gabriela Frías.
Until this June 15, 13 opposition leaders have been arrested in the country. The Nicaraguan authorities have reported that these arrests are due to alleged acts of destabilization and other activities that they consider illegal.
The detainees deny such accusations.
