President Putin arrives at the summit site

The Russian caravan took President Vladimir Putin and his delegation to Villa La Grange.

He was greeted by the President of Switzerland, Guy Parmelin, on the steps of the mansion, where they posed briefly for photographers before entering, prior to the arrival of President Biden.

CNN's chief international correspondent Clarissa Ward described Putin as "laid-back" and "jovial."

Russia's expectations for the summit

Russian President Vladimir Putin landed in Geneva and headed to Villa La Grange on the shores of Lake Geneva, a historic 18th-century mansion where his summit with Biden will take place.

Russian expectations for this crucial summit are low, echoing the framing the White House has been using in recent days.

The fact that the meeting takes place is considered an achievement.

That said, there are common areas: climate change, arms reduction, various regional conflicts are topics that you could discuss.

And we even got to see some signed joint statements on some of those issues, according to the Kremlin.

But with major disagreements central to this strained relationship between the United States and Russia, no one seriously expects any solid progress during a single summit.

There are some areas where we are unlikely to see any movement, including cyberattacks against the US emanating from Russia, the military threat that Russia continues to pose to its neighbors, particularly Ukraine, and the issue of Navalny and other activists from the opposition who have been attacked within Russia.

Ultimately, on these important issues, we expect Putin to take a hard line.

This is what happened at the US-EU summit on Tuesday

By Kevin Liptak

US President Joe Biden reached a summit with European Union leaders that officials said would focus primarily on trade issues.

Biden has yet to reverse the Trump-era tariffs on steel and aluminum, but he helped resolve a dispute that had raged for nearly two decades over subsidies for Boeing and Airbus.

The two sides were expected to announce a resolution to the aircraft dispute and signal progress on the metals tariffs without formally announcing their suspension yet.

Biden is eager to reestablish transatlantic ties on his European tour this week, hoping to enter the high-stakes summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin tomorrow by appearing united with Western allies.

That has come mainly in statements of support, but the resolution of the trade dispute is a concrete sign of his intention to normalize America's traditional alliances after four years of tension.

America is back.

We are committed, we have never quite left, but we reaffirm the fact that it overwhelmingly benefits the United States to have a great relationship with NATO and the EU, "Biden said at the beginning of the talks.

"I have a very different vision than my predecessor."

His message was received by his hosts, the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.

"The last four years have not been easy," von der Leyen said.

Officials want to ease trade tensions ahead of Biden's meeting with Putin to form a united front against Moscow.

The brother of American detained in Russia has "hopes" in aid of Biden

By CNN's Adrienne Vogt

Paul Whelan sits in a holding cell while awaiting a courtroom hearing in Moscow, Russia, on August 23, 2019.

David Whelan, brother of Paul Whelan, an American imprisoned in Russia since 2018, said he is "hopeful" that the Joe Biden administration can help free his brother.

"I would say thank you," Whelan said he would tell Biden before Wednesday's meeting between the US president and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.

“For extending the offer to have this summit.

For being pragmatic in the relationship with the Russian Federation and letting him know that we support him and the decisions he may have to make.

And we are hopeful that your administration will find a way to bring our brother, son, home to our family, "he added.

Paul Whelan, a former US Marine, was found guilty by a Moscow spy court on June 15, 2020 and sentenced to 16 years in prison.

He was detained in a Moscow hotel in December 2018 by Russian authorities who alleged that he was involved in an intelligence operation.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said Moscow is ready to hand over convicted US citizens in Russia, but Paul Whelan will not be among them.

David Whelan told CNN's Ana Cabrera that he believes his brother is being used as a bargaining chip.

Whelan also said he understands that Biden is in a "difficult situation."

"The president is responsible for all American citizens wherever they are, so it is a very difficult situation for him to have to decide," he said.

Biden arrives in Geneva: the details of the summit with Putin

By Kevin Liptak

President Joe Biden arrived in Geneva on Tuesday as US officials laid out the structure for his long-awaited talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Air Force One landed in Geneva around 10:20 am ET // 4:20 pm local.
