Russian President Vladimir Putin announced tonight (Wednesday) after the joint summit with US President Joe Biden in Geneva that the countries had "agreed on the return of ambassadors."

This, after a period of slump in diplomatic relations between Washington and Moscow.

Putin added that the foreign ministries in both countries will begin talks on returning to the diplomatic track.

He said he did not feel hostility on Biden's part during the summit and described the talks as "helpful".

With regard to Ukraine, the Russian president said she was mentioned during the day, but stressed that "there was nothing to discuss" about her possible accession to NATO.

The two-presidential summit lasted about four hours. They were “quite successful.” Biden was seen waving his thumb as he left the mansion where the leaders had gathered for their first meeting since taking office in January.

As the summit began in the afternoon, Biden and Putin shook hands and entered the villa after the Swiss president welcomed them.

After entering the mansion, Putin said he "hopes for a helpful meeting."

Biden said that "it is always better to meet face to face."

The last time the two met was in March 2011, when Biden was Barack Obama's deputy and Putin was prime minister.

The summit takes place at a time when relations between Washington and Moscow are at a decade-long low.

From the beginning of the Democratic president's presidency about five months ago, they have insulted each other.

Biden called Putin a "killer" and accused him of cyber-attacks against American interests, undermining democracy after the imprisonment of opposition leader Alexei Navalny and interfering in US elections.

Moscow returned its ambassador from the United States in March, and Washington responded with a similar move in April.
