The regional identity map

The regional campaign reveals several themes that will be at the heart of the presidential debate next year. Safety, the economic stimulus

“Our region is not called

South

, but Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur.

When you have three world-famous brands (…), you don't try to create a fourth ”: Thierry Mariani, head of the RN en Paca list, during one of the regional debates.

"Seeing the disappearance of Picardy or Alsace, that poses a huge problem for me with regard to our attachment to our identity": Marine Le Pen, during a trip to Meurthe-et-Moselle to support the RN candidate in the Grand -Is, Laurent Jacobelli.

Almost everywhere, the RN lists use this argument which hits the mark with all those who saw in the creation of the thirteen large regions in 2015 the negation of their particularity and, frankly, of their identity.

Identity is also the fuel of the demonstrations at the end of May in Brittany, Occitania, and the Basque Country, where thousands of people marched against the censorship by the Constitutional Council of "immersive education" voted by Parliament, which allowed a school to provide most of the lessons in the regional language.

This regional campaign sometimes goes under the media radars. However, it is revealing of themes that will be at the heart of the presidential debate next year. Security, sovereignty, economic recovery, of course. But also this weak signal: the need for identity is still there, perhaps even accentuated by the Covid crisis and the feeling of downgrading that it has worsened. The candidates of the governing parties know that they will need to have a convincing speech on the subject. Because Marine Le Pen, who has already promised that she would return to the twenty-two regions if she was elected president, hopes to have a head start.
