Because numerous children cut their toes on sharp-edged tiles, the outdoor wave pool in Peiting should close in July.

But now there are threats that the bathroom must be evacuated.

Update, June 17th, 5.30 p.m.: The fully occupied Peitinger wave pool had to be cleared on Thursday afternoon. This was announced by a desperate mayor Peter Ostenrieder at around 4.45 p.m. The background to this is the problem with the sharp-edged joints in the non-swimmer area of the wave pool, where children in particular were injured (see report below).

Now Ostenrieder had received threats on his Facebook page that he would be reported for assault and that the police had apparently also received something, the mayor said.

“People pretend that the basin is full of blood - of course it is not,” he asserts.

But after consulting with his lawyer, he advised the bathroom to be cleared as soon as possible.

"The bathroom is packed, it's really no fun," said Ostenrieder, who is terribly sorry.

So far it was planned to close the wave swimming pool in two weeks for the necessary repair work.

That should be preferred now.

“Of course we try to do the work right away so that we can open the bathroom again as quickly as possible,” he said.

- In this first summer heat, which is currently

making

the country sweat

, going to the outdoor pool is very popular

. Finally back in the water: Especially for the children who have had to go without their bathing fun for so long due to Corona in the past few months, there could hardly be anything nicer. In the Peitinger outdoor wave pool, however, the enjoyable visit for so many young bathers apparently ended with aching feet and a thick plaster on their toes.

The reason for this lies under water at the bottom of the wave pool.

Apparently they forgot to joint the tiles properly, says a mother, whose child sustained cuts on the feet on the sharp edges during the swimming course.

The mother reports of other children who have had the same experience.

The small cuts are not only uncomfortable, but very painful.

"The children cried because it hurt so much." It's great that the bathroom is open again.

"But something like that mustn't happen."

Lots of complaints from parents

When asked by Schongauer Nachrichten, Mayor Peter Ostenrieder confirmed on Wednesday that the town hall had received many complaints from parents since the bathroom was opened three weeks ago. There have been isolated cases of such cuts in the past, but never so often, said the town hall chief. "That was a clear signal for us that something couldn't be right."

During the on-site assessment, the solution to the riddle was found.

According to the mayor, during the last cleaning of the basins before filling, the pressure of the high-pressure cleaner detached old and porous grout from the tiled floor unnoticed.

“Unfortunately, the affected areas are in the non-swimmer area of the wave pool.” The sharp edges of the tiles are especially dangerous for children's feet.

"Adults are better protected by their thicker cornea."

Repair takes two weeks

Good advice was now dear to the community. "Unfortunately, the problem cannot be solved overnight," said Ostenrieder. Because in order to re-grout the affected areas, the water must be drained from the basin. Of course, this cannot be done while the bathroom is in operation. Waiting until after the season was over was no alternative for those responsible. As the operator, you are responsible for the safety of visitors, said Ostenrieder.

At a local crisis meeting today, the decision was therefore made to temporarily close the open-air wave pool from July 1st. The town hall chief estimates that the repair would take two weeks. Because with the small tiles, it takes time before the new grout is in place. Then the joints would have to dry and the pool cleaned before the water could be let in again. The aim is for the pool to open again by July 17th at the latest, Ostrieder announced, who asked for understanding for the decision.

Because bathing can continue until it is closed, the community appeals to parents to be aware of the problem and, as a precautionary measure, to only send their children into the water with bathing shoes in the next two weeks.

It remains to be seen whether that will be enough to prevent further bloody toes.
