A number of US lawmakers urged President Joe Biden to cooperate with Russian President Vladimir Putin on various issues, ahead of the Russian-American summit to be held in the Swiss city of Geneva later today.

In a letter to Biden, 15 US lawmakers called for cooperation with Russia in various areas of global importance, including arms control, and warned that "an armed conflict between Russia and the United States would be a disaster for both countries, Europe, our allies, and the entire world."

Pamela Gaiapal, a Democratic member of the US House of Representatives, published the text of the letter addressed to Biden on her personal website, in which he stated, “We hope that during the negotiations you will give priority to areas in which the United States and Russia can work to reduce tensions in the disputed areas and cooperate on issues of global importance such as Armament to avoid a new nuclear race, climate change and violent extremism, reduce cyber threats to national economies and infrastructure, and reduce global inequality.”

The letter pointed out that Russia and the United States possess 90 percent of the world's nuclear warheads and that diplomatic cooperation between the two countries is necessary to avoid nuclear proliferation or even nuclear war, calling on the US president to "review and cancel current proposals to increase spending on nuclear weapons."

It is scheduled to meet Putin and Biden in Geneva later today to discuss Russian-American relations and strategic stability, as well as combating the Corona epidemic and settling regional conflicts.
