A 44-year-old man was sentenced to seven days' imprisonment at the Eastern Magistracy today for violating the "Regulations on Compulsory Quarantine of Certain Persons Arriving in Hong Kong" (Chapter 599C).

The man who had completed the COVID-19 vaccination was issued a compulsory quarantine order when he entered the country on June 2, 2021, stating that he must undergo compulsory quarantine at home for 7 days.

Before the quarantine order expired, he was found to have taken off his wristband and left his quarantine site during a surprise inspection on June 4, 2021, without reasonable excuse and without the permission of an authorized person.

He was charged with two violations of Articles 8(1), 8(4) and 8(5) of the Regulations. He was sentenced to 8 days’ imprisonment for each of the two offences at the Eastern Magistracy today, with concurrent executions.

Violation of the compulsory quarantine order constitutes a criminal offence, and offenders can be fined up to 25,000 yuan and imprisoned for six months.

A spokesperson for the Department of Health said that the sentence can give the society very clear information, pointing out that violating the quarantine order is a criminal offence. The government will not tolerate those who violate the relevant regulations, and solemnly reminds the public to abide by the relevant regulations.

As of today, a total of 143 people have been convicted by the court for violating the quarantine order, sentenced to immediate imprisonment for up to 14 weeks or fined up to 15,000 yuan.

The spokesperson reiterated that the Department of Health will definitely follow up any violation of relevant regulations.
