Due to the corona pandemic, the airport in Nuremberg suffered heavy losses.

Nevertheless, the management looks to the future with confidence.

Nuremberg - The enormous effects of the global Corona * pandemic hit the tourism industry in particular. As a result, Nuremberg Airport * had to post losses of more than 40 million euros last year. Contrary to the trend in which profits have been made in recent years, no positive results could be achieved despite immediate countermeasures due to Corona, as can be seen from a press release from Albrecht Dürer Airport in Nuremberg *.

An early response by management and the consistent implementation of savings in investments, personnel and material costs limited the loss.

Short-time working instruments have been widely used in almost all areas of the Group since April 2020 in order to keep jobs until the end of the epidemic.

In order to adapt the workforce to the reduced volume of traffic in the future, a volunteer program was launched.

Nuremberg Airport: Red numbers for 2020 - almost 80 percent fewer air travelers

Almost one million passengers used Nuremberg's Albrecht Dürer Airport in 2020 for business and leisure trips or to visit family and relatives.

This is a decrease of around 78 percent from the previous year, due to travel restrictions related to the pandemic.

Nuremberg Airport last had fewer than a million passengers in 1985.

The distribution of the passenger numbers is as follows: Passenger traffic within Europe fell by 77.8 percent to around 700,000.

The flow of passengers to destinations outside Europe fell by 69 percent to less than 66,000 passengers and thus developed better than the airports in the ADV Airport Association with an average of minus 77.1 percent.

After a good start with small increases in January and February 2020, the pandemic caused a sharp decline in passenger numbers from March and commercial passenger traffic had to be completely stopped soon after, even in mid-June 2020.

Summer 2020 did not meet expectations.

After the first and second “lockdown light” at the latest, traveling was almost impossible.

Nuremberg Airport: Results for the 2020 financial year

In the 2020 financial year, a consolidated deficit of 41.2 million euros was reported; before that, the consolidated net income for 2019 was 3.01 million euros.

The currency effect of the reduced flight volume is also reflected in the profit forecast for 2021.

When planning a trip, travel restrictions continue to create significant uncertainty.

This is expressed directly in the booking situation.

In addition, it is not yet foreseeable how the virus mutations will affect the next few months.

Nuremberg Airport is optimistic about the future

Even if the pandemic continues, the management is optimistic about the future and is assuming a moderate increase in passenger numbers for 2021.

Measures such as broad immunization and an expansion of the test options before departure will be further expanded.

In the future, you will be able to secure yourself with quick tests before take-off at Nuremberg Airport.

Airlines and airports are ready to respond to rising demand at short notice.
