Causes of blackout in Puerto Rico investigated 2:49
(CNN Spanish) -
During the night of this Wednesday, Luma Energy, a private company in charge of the transmission and distribution of electricity in Puerto Rico, confirmed through its Twitter account that breakdowns in some of its energy units in San Juan and Mayagüez caused a power outage that affected service to 337,000 customers.
Around 11:20 p.m., Luma Energy reported that service had been restored to just over 252,000 customers.
During Wednesday, the company informed its clients via Twitter that, due to the limited power generation capacity, in the next three days, they could experience interruptions in their electricity service.
On Thursday, June 10, a fire in one of the transformers of the electricity substation at the Monacillos plant, in San Juan, caused the electricity to be interrupted.
Luma Energy reported that this emergency left 900,000 customers without electricity in different municipalities of Puerto Rico.
By the next day, most of the customers had already returned to service.
