Perfect beer garden weather and allowed stopping off again - but many innkeepers lack staff.

The Tegernseer Hof in Finsterwald is also affected.

In general, the hotel plans have stalled there due to Corona.

Gmund - While the people pour into the valley, the innkeepers breathe a sigh of relief and every available space around the lake is occupied in this first wave of summer, guests at the Tegernseer Hof are standing in front of closed doors.

"We still need time and have to find staff," says owner Kristian-Nicol Worbs, thus summarizing a problem that has been upsetting the entire catering industry since the beginning of the Corona crisis in 2020.

Because fear of layoffs, short-time work benefits and an uncertain future in general, many employees in the catering and hotel industry are reorienting themselves.

Staff shortage at the Tegernseer Hof - not an isolated case

"The personnel problem in our industry has been exacerbated by Corona", knows Hans Vogl, district chairman of the Bavarian hotel and restaurant association Dehoga and owner of the hotel and country inn Altwirt in Großhartpenning. The debate about working hours, for example, has always existed, "but in the past few months, when the industry came to a complete standstill, many employees finally took a different approach." because the whole world is open ”, advertises Vogl, who admits that his company has come out of the lockdowns well. In other words: without loss of personnel. Things look different in the Tegernseer Bräustüberl, for example: “We're looking in all areas,” says Caterina Hubert, wife of host Peter Hubert. Be sadbut quite a few employees quit and found jobs in supermarkets, for example. The castle distillery next door, she reports, is only open on weekends because of the lack of staff.

Back to the Tegernseer Hof: According to the owner, “at least ten people” are needed there. He finds it difficult to find new people. Is the personnel problem homemade there? It is said that the staff at the Tegernseer Hof were dismissed before the corona-related closings. These conditions would deter new staff for the future and the still not over corona crisis. Thomas Knabl (47) has been chef de cuisine at Tegernseer Hof since 2019. So far he has worked there on a self-employed basis and was hard hit by the closings. Together with his wife Julia, he has now helped at least to get the hotel in Tegernseer Hof, which has only been reopened a few days, up and running. Knabl leaves it open whether he will continue there. He doesn't want to comment on it either. However, it is rumoredthat he has already received another, good offer.

Hotel plans for Tegernseer Hof are still in the drawer for the time being

So no rosy prospects for a company that has recently re-established itself in Gmund and is actually forging big plans: In November, the Worbs family presented hotel plans to the building committee and received approval for a preliminary decision application.

Among other things, a new building is planned, which will expand the existing 18 rooms by a further 23 and connect it to the existing inn with the hotel.

"The plans were not pushed forward because of Corona and are in the drawer," Worbs has to admit.

According to the head of the building authority, Christine Wild, the necessary development plan has not yet been tackled either.

The owners and operators are just as removed from a permit as from the staff required to restart the inn.

By the way: Everything from the region is now also available in our new, regular Tegernsee newsletter.
