District - health, environment, fun - there are a few reasons to switch to bicycles.

The past pandemic summer with increased bike sales showed that more and more people are getting a taste for it.

The city cycling campaign also shows that bicycles are becoming increasingly popular in the district.

This year's campaign starts this Saturday, June 19th in the Miesbach district.

Many municipalities and the district are taking part, with seven accompanying the three-week campaign period until July 9 with an additional program (see box).

The district town shows that city cycling is getting more attention.

Last year Miesbach took part in the campaign for the first time - just nine teams with a total of 46 participants took part in October, which was no longer so bike-friendly.

This time there are already 15 teams and 98 registered cyclists.

In Holzkirchen, on the other hand, the campaign has now been established for the third time.

This is shown by the 29 teams and the 263 registered participants.

What is also new is that everyone participates together under the leadership of the district.

“It is important to show that we are one district together,” says Max Kalup, who is responsible for city marketing at the city of Miesbach.

This means that everyone can experience the campaign at the same time and the accompanying program, which includes some cycling tours and culinary delights that go well with cycling (see box).

In addition to having fun, there are also serious goals that city cycling should support, namely saving CO2.

“You want people to switch to bikes,” explains Kalup.

It doesn't matter whether this only happens in your free time or - so it would be ideal - also during the week for appointments, errands or the drive to work.

"The aim is to save as many tons of carbon dioxide as possible."

In order to be able to measure how much CO2 is saved by city cycling in the district, the campaign is digitally networked.

And this is how it works: Register at www.stadtradeln.de and download the app.

Each participant can record his or her ways and routes in their free time or in everyday life and then receive a detailed evaluation of the routes they have covered and the CO2 saved.

In addition, each participant can join one of the numerous district or community teams or found a team themselves.

If you just want to join in, the open group of your respective community is waiting for you.

After the campaign period, the winners will be determined in different price categories, who can then look forward to material prizes and a certificate.

"We hope that we can use the campaign to encourage as many people as possible to take part in the campaign and to cycle more often instead of using the car," says Eva-Maria Schmitz, head of location promotion in Holzkirchen. The prerequisites for this are good. After all, more and more communities are taking part in city cycling. As the opening of the campaign, District Administrator Olaf von Löwis and Miesbach's Mayor Gerhard Braunmiller kicked off the pedals on Saturday. The two-hour bike tour through Miesbach starts at 4 p.m. at the town hall. Passengers are very welcome, and a small free snack on the way is also planned.
