The National Security Department of the police arrested five Next Media Group directors this morning (17th), alleging that they were suspected of violating Article 29 of the "Minato National Security Act" "conspiracy to collude with foreign countries or foreign forces to endanger national security".

The five people include Zhang Jianhong, Chief Executive Officer of Next Media Group, Zhou Daquan, Chief Operating Officer, Luo Weiguang, Editor-in-Chief of Apple Daily, Chen Peimin, Deputy President, and Zhang Zhiwei, Executive Editor-in-Chief.

According to Article 29 of the "Minato National Security Law", anyone who commits the crime of "conspiring to collude with foreign countries or foreign forces to endanger national security" will be sentenced to 3 to 10 years in prison; for serious crimes, to life imprisonment or more than 10 years Fixed-term imprisonment.

After the implementation of the National Security Law last year, a total of 10 people were charged with related crimes after taking into account the 5 people arrested this morning, including the founder of Next Media Group Li Zhiying and the former Hong Kong Zhizhi member Zhou Ting.

On August 10 last year, the National Security Service of the police conducted a large-scale raid for nearly 15 hours and arrested 10 men and women including Li Zhiying, Li Zhiying and his two sons, four senior officials of the One Media Group, and Zhou Ting.

They were involved in the crimes of "Collusion with foreign countries or foreign forces to endanger national security", "Incitement" and "Conspiracy to defraud" in Article 29 of the "Minato National Security Law".

Among them, Li Zhiying, Li Zhiying’s second son, Lai Yaoen, Next Media Group President and Chief Financial Officer Zhou Daquan and Zhou Ting, who were arrested this morning, Li Yuxuan, a member of the civil organization "Hong Kong Story", and Li Zongze, a former member of the school of thought, were all charged with " Collusion with foreign countries or foreign forces endangers national security."

Except for Li Zhiying and Li Yuxuan, everyone was released on bail awaiting hearing.

Zhou Ting was released from prison last Saturday (12th) in the case of besieging the police chief. Currently, he is still involved in a case of "collusion with foreign countries or foreign powers" and is temporarily released on bail pending investigation.

Li Guihua pointed out that the National Security Department's investigation found that from 2019 to the present, dozens of articles in the "Apple Daily" physical newspaper and online are suspected of calling for foreign and other organizations to impose sanctions on China and the SAR government.

The arrested persons include the directors, proprietors, publishers and editors of Apple Daily, etc. The police action continues and it is not ruled out that more people will be arrested.

The police also pointed out that according to the order of the Secretary for Security, three companies including Apple Daily were frozen, with a total of 18 million yuan in assets.
