The Swedish government of Social Democratic Prime Minister Stefan Löfven finds itself under threat of a vote of no confidence in parliament on Monday, which unexpectedly opens up the scenario of elections ahead of their currently scheduled date of September 2022.

The Left Party, until then regular support of the government, announced Thursday its intention to vote no confidence in protest against a project to liberalize regulated rents. In the process, the far-right Swedish Democrats tabled a motion of censure, which the right-wing Moderates and Christian Democrats will also vote on. If these four parties voted together against the government on Monday, the government would fall.
