The PolyU incident a year ago triggered a large number of citizens to support. Two young people were arrested for participating in the riot in Yau Ma Tei. They pleaded guilty earlier. One of them pleaded for mercy and went to the scene because he saw excessive rumors and false news on the way to work. Later, he was emotionally affected and committed a crime. .

The judge sentenced today (17th) that although there was a violent incident in PolyU, the case took place some distance away from PolyU. He believed that the case had nothing to do with the incident in PolyU. He also pointed out that the area involved in the case had already been closed due to the PolyU incident and that the incident in this case caused the public. There was not much nuisance, and after considering all factors, the two were sentenced to 32 months in prison each.

Two defendants: Shi Yinghao (24 years old, construction worker) and Wen Ziqiang (21 years old, printing factory clerk).

The two admitted to participating in the riots along Gascoigne Road and Jordan Road in Yau Ma Tei on November 18, 2019.

The first defendant claimed to have seen fake news on his way to work

The first defendant mentioned in a written plea that he saw excessive rumors and false news on the way to work that day, so he went to the PolyU area, and later committed the crime at the scene because of emotional influence, and he pushed the roadblock only to protect others; there is no evidence. Shows that the defendant has committed violent acts.

The official said that this case has nothing to do with PolyU's affairs

Judge Li Junwen pointed out that a series of violent incidents occurred within the PolyU, but the incident in this case took place some distance outside the PolyU. He believed that it had nothing to do with the incident within the PolyU, and that the incident within the PolyU would not be considered when sentencing.

Guan Li also believes that this case is an emergency, and the area involved in the case has already been closed due to the PolyU incident. The incident in this case caused little nuisance to the public, and no police officers or citizens were injured in the incident.

The two defendants did not call on others to participate

Li Guan continued that the two defendants were not leading roles, nor did they instigate or call others to participate in the riots. He accepted that they committed crimes on impulse, and also accepted that the first defendant carried knives and hammers for work purposes only.

Although there is no evidence that the defendant had used petrol bombs, he was discarding suspected petrol bombs when he was arrested, which involved the risk of use.

Li Guan believes that the guilt of the two are similar, but considering that the two are still young, only first offenders and committing crimes impulsively, in addition to the one-third penalty for pleading guilty, the sentence is reduced by an additional 2 months.

Many people gathered in Jordan on the night of the incident

The case refers to a series of riots at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University beginning on November 11, 2019, and the incident ended on November 28 of that year.

On the day of the incident, a large number of people gathered outside Diocesan Girls' School on Jordan Road. Some people were holding petrol bombs, bricks and other objects to advance toward the police line and the PolyU.

The police once fired tear gas, and people including the first defendant pushed a yellow roadblock against the police line of defense, and the first defendant was subdued by the police at the nearest line of defense in front of the crowd.

The police found two knives and a hammer in his backpack.

The second defendant who was in the crowd ran away with the crowd but was subdued by the police. He was also the only person who was successfully intercepted by the police. He was discarding the suspected petrol bomb on the ground.
