An image in subtle colors, a few seagulls, four palm trees to recall the city of Cannes, and then, below, half of Spike Lee's face.
Thursday, the Cannes Festival team unveiled its poster, in order to make the public wait before July 6, D-Day for the event.
After honoring photographer and director Agnès Varda in 2019, the Festival has this time chosen to honor its president of the jury.
On the poster, we can see the American actor and director, winner of the festival's Grand Prix in 2018 for
BlaKkKlansman
, his eyes raised to the sky. A photograph from the late 1980s, taken by Bob Peterson, as part of a sports shoe advertisement. In this shot, Spike Lee wears the glasses and the cap he wore for his role of Mars Blackmon in
Nola does as he pleases
, his first feature film released in 1986. The film had also won the Youth Prize in the foreign film category at Cannes, the same year. On the cap, the original “
Brooklyn
Has been replaced by the emblematic Cannes palm, whose gold stands out in the visual all in shades of gray and pale blue.
Indeed, the rest of the poster is in shades of gray, a reference once again to
Nola does as she pleases
, shot in black and white.

All with a "
curious look
", "
personal
", "
tender
" and "
malicious
", analyze the organizers in a press release. Without however explaining the choice to have cut the face of the filmmaker, reminiscent of the poster for
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
, Michel Gondry's film released in 2004. The festival team also takes the opportunity to applaud the "
pioneering style
steeped in urban and popular culture
”by Spike Lee, who“
for nearly four decades has never neglected entertainment
".
Not insignificant advantage, the half-hidden face does not allow to say if Spike Lee respects well - or not - the sanitary instructions while wearing a mask.
The direction of the festival thus spares a very probable controversy as the summer season has the secret.
Before opening its doors on July 6 after a canceled 2020 edition, the Festival should soon announce the film that will be screened during the “
last
screening
” as well as the composition of the jury.
