Bank accounts of 13 Nicaraguan businessmen freeze

The Nicaraguan justice ordered this Wednesday the lifting of banking secrecy and the freezing of the accounts of 13 senior executives and businessmen, who are linked in an open case to the Nicaraguan Foundation for Economic and Social Development (Funides) and an alleged violation of the Foreign Agents Law, as reported by the Public Ministry this Wednesday through a statement.

The measure was ordered by the judge of the Ninth Criminal Hearing District of Managua, Karen Vanessa Chavarría Morales.

Luis Ángel Montenegro, Superintendent of Banks and Other Financial Institutions (Siboif), the state entity that supervises banking in the country, ordered the national banking system on Wednesday to "immediately comply with what is ordered by the judicial authority" and "send the results to the office of the Attorney General of the Republic ”, according to a circular to which CNN had access.

The judge's order reaches Juan Carlos Sansón Caldera, Gerardo José Baltodano Cantarero, Edwin Alejandro Mendieta Chamorro, Martha Jeannette Duque-Estrada Gurdián, Humberto Antonio Belli Pereira, Alfredo José Marín Ximénez, Roberto Martino Salvo, Aurora Mercedes Gurdián Ubago, Mario José Arana Sevilla, José Evenor Taboada Arana, José Antonio Baltodano Cabrera and Jaime Javier Montealegre Lacayo and Luis Alberto Rivas Anduray, president of the Promerica Group, arrested this Tuesday.

CNN tried to get a comment from a member of Funides but we are still waiting for a response to our request.

Funides, as reported by the entity on its website, "is an independent thought institution that specializes in research and policy analysis in the areas of economic development and institutional reform."

On its site, the foundation published regular reports on the economic situation, and recently also on public policies regarding the covid-19 pandemic.

Before his arrest on Tuesday night, Rivas Anduray, from Promerica, had appeared for an appointment before the Public Ministry for the open case against Funides, according to that institution.

The National Police reported in a statement investigating Rivas Anduray for allegedly violating Law 1055, called the "Law for the defense of the rights of the people to independence, sovereignty and self-determination for peace."

The authorities did not report whether the cause of the investigation is personal or institutional.

Meanwhile, Banpro Promerica issued a statement saying: "We are sure of the moral quality of Dr. Rivas and we trust that his situation will be clarified."
