Hebertshausen converts street lamps

Climate protection begins on site.

The Hebertshauser municipal council was therefore informed in its most recent meeting about the possibilities of converting street lighting to energy-saving LED technology.

After all, as Josef Bestle from the network operator Bayernwerk explained, “street lighting is one of the biggest consumers”.

- In fact, the community also has a role model function, and retrofitting also saves costs and CO2 at the same time, explained Mayor Richard Reischl, who had put the topic on the agenda.

Contrary to what was originally planned, the council has not yet taken a decision.

Because town hall chief Reischl had learned about another, additional funding program at short notice.

By combining two subsidy pots, the Petershausen community had just succeeded in receiving almost 90 percent funding for their LED retrofitting.

The prerequisite, however, was that the municipality itself became the owner of the street lamps, i.e. bought them from Bayernwerk.

In Hebertshausen they want to check all options again before the municipal council makes a final decision.

But there is a need for action: there are currently only 91 lanterns with modern LED modules in the village, the remaining 704 street lights are still equipped with fluorescent or high-pressure sodium vapor lamps, and 64 others have already been retrofitted with LED inserts.

When it comes to the shape of the lamp, there is also diversity in Hebertshausen; there are eight models of the more sober technical lamps alone, plus five versions of so-called "creative lights".

The following applies to everyone: With the significantly more efficient LED lamps, "some money can be saved".

Specifically, electricity costs could fall by 27,100 euros a year, and maintenance could be cheaper by 2,400 euros a year.

In practice, the conversion works without any problems, according to the expert Bestle, only the lamp head is replaced, "the masts can remain standing".

The calculated energy savings result if the lighting is dimmed to 50 percent in the future from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

So far, the light intensity in Hebertshausen has only been turned down from 1 a.m.

"The trend is towards more dimming."

Bestle recommends warm white with 3000 Kelvin for the light color.

This light color is a little less efficient in terms of power consumption than cold white (4000 Kelvin), "but it is insect-friendly".

Of course, the cost of the retrofit is also decisive: If the previously known 30 percent subsidy program is used, the municipality will have to raise around 263,000 euros, and the investment will pay for itself in nine years.

"Any amortization under ten years is good business," says Reischl.

If the second subsidy becomes possible, the financial outlay for Hebertshausen could drop significantly.

The mayor did not have to convince the municipal councils for long.

"We fully support it," said Martin Gasteiger (FBB).

The administration should now “get the best out of it” in terms of funding.

But Gasteiger wanted to know whether the new lamps might not disturb residents.

"LED is much more directional and there are screens," said expert Bestle, denying this concern.

There was also positive feedback from the CSU. “It's not a question of whether we will convert, but when,” said Stefan Ruhsam, referring to the strained budget situation. The answer came from Marianne Klaffki (SPD), who advocated “starting immediately with the current minimum interest rate”. After all, municipalities are also obliged to participate in order to secure the ecological subsistence level for the next generation. "This is an example with a signal effect in a double sense."

At the request of Caroline Heinz (SPD), it was discussed whether the lights in individual streets could be completely switched off at night. She knows it from a village in France, said Heinz. But the mayor referred to the duty of road safety, the citizens' feeling of security could also suffer in total darkness. The decision to upgrade the LED was then postponed until September, until then it is hoped that the funding will be clarified. The project could then start in practice in 2022 at the earliest.
