The preliminary investigation into the shooting at the citizens' office of the SPD member of the Bundestag Karamba Diaby in Halle (Saale) is apparently about to be concluded - without a possible perpetrator being identified so far.

As the public prosecutor's office announced at the request of SPIEGEL, there are still a few final examinations of DNA smears pending, but it cannot be assumed that they will find out more about the perpetrator (s).

In January 2020, strangers attacked Diaby's office in Saxony-Anhalt.

Five bullet holes several millimeters in size were found in the windows.

According to investigators, however, Diaby's office was not the only object in Halle that was shot at.

"The State Criminal Police Office has determined that there have been almost 40 such cases in the entire city area without a connection being apparent," said prosecutor Dennis Cernota.

It is now assumed that it was “not a targeted attack on Diaby's office”.

Rather, it is more likely that strangers would have liked damaging office windows throughout the city.

In various cases, plastic and glass balls were found and, according to the ballistic investigation, it could be assumed that no sharp weapons were used, said Cernota.

In addition, the public prosecutor points out that the bullet holes were not directly in the portrait of Diabys glued to the window.

“Apparently it wasn't aimed at him.

That rather suggests that the attack wasn't aimed at Mr Diaby, ”Cernota said.

Diaby's office is in the middle of a busy downtown street between bars and cafes.

The bullet holes had caused horror in the city and nationwide.

Diaby has been a member of the German Bundestag since 2013.

The SPD politician was previously a city councilor in Halle.

For years, the 58-year-old has received threats of violence and death from the right-wing extremist scene.

His office has also been attacked several times.

In January 2020, he told SPIEGEL: "There have been insults and threats against me on social media, but this attack has reached a new level of violence." He very much hopes "that the police will clear up the case quickly."
