Five directors and senior executives of Apple Daily were arrested yesterday (17th) on suspicion of "conspiracy to collude with foreign countries or endanger national security by foreign forces" in violation of the "Minato National Security Law."

The U.S. State Department strongly condemned it, believing that the accusation was politically motivated and demanded the immediate release of the five people. British Foreign Minister Lan Taowen also criticized it for targeting dissident voices.

The Office of the Special Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Hong Kong stated that this was a malicious interference with the law enforcement agencies of the Special Administrative Region in handling cases according to law, a wanton destruction of the rule of law and judicial independence in Hong Kong, a flagrant desecration of the spirit of the rule of law, and gross interference in Hong Kong and Macao affairs and China's internal affairs. Dissatisfied and resolutely opposed.

The spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Hong Kong said that no one has the privilege to be above the law, and that freedom of the press is not a shield for illegal activities, and the authority of the National Security Law cannot be challenged.

The spokesman said that the actions taken by the Hong Kong SAR police against the above-mentioned persons and companies were to crack down on crimes endangering national security in accordance with the law and had nothing to do with freedom of the press. He also stated that no one should interfere with cases that have entered judicial proceedings.

The spokesperson emphasized that any noise, intervention, and pressure from external forces cannot shake the central and SAR government's strong will to safeguard national security, and cannot shake the firm determination to fully and accurately implement "one country, two systems."

The Commissioner’s Office urges politicians from a few countries to abide by the basic norms of international law and international relations, immediately stop shielding the clumsy performances of anti-China chaos in Hong Kong, stop futile actions that interfere with the rule of law and judicial independence of the SAR, and stop interfering in Hong Kong affairs and China’s internal affairs.
