Freising's veterinary director explains what this means for the consumption of edible fish.

District

- The fish disease infectious haematopoietic necrosis (IHN) has broken out in the Freising district.

Veterinary director Dr.

Barbara Knauer-Kraetzl explains what this means for the consumption of fish and how the disease is combated.

Ms. Knauer-Kraetzl, what exactly is infectious hematopoietic necrosis?

HIM is a virus-related disease affecting salmon and trout.

Different species are differently susceptible to the virus.

For example, char or rainbow trout are considered susceptible; brown trout is not listed in the ordinance.

How does this disease show up in animals?

It can cause changes in the haematopoietic tissue in which blood cells are formed.

Among other things, bleeding from the fins, protruding eyeballs and distended bellies can occur in the fish.

At water temperatures of around 15 degrees Celsius, infected fish usually show no symptoms.

That is the case with us right now.

However, tests carried out - PCR tests - were positive.

How did you become aware of IHN in the district if the animals showed no symptoms?

A report by the superior authorities made epidemiological investigations necessary.

What are the consequences of these positive test results?

Animals that are positive and show clinical symptoms must be killed.

If fish from one stock test positive, the remaining fish that do not show any symptoms - which, as I said, is the case with us - can be slaughtered under canalised conditions and also sold for consumption.

Of course, it is now important to work through these cases quickly.

The ponds are disinfected accordingly after emptying and the slaughtering process is carried out in accordance with animal disease hygiene criteria.

Everything is done to prevent the virus from spreading.

With a view to the weekly market on this Saturday or the fish on the stick when you visit the beer garden: is consumption of these fish harmful to people?

No.

Anyone who buys a fish can eat it safely and with pleasure.

The disease cannot be transmitted to humans; according to current scientific knowledge, consumption is harmless for us.

The IHN concerns the fish - and not the people.
