A 2-year-old boy was killed and a 9-year-old was seriously injured in a shooting on a Detroit freeway Thursday night, authorities said.
A driver had just entered I-75 South from Seven Mile Road when
a car pulled up next to him and began shooting,
according to Michigan State Police.
"The victim's driver stopped at McNichols and noticed that his two sons had been shot," the state agency said.
Police are investigating where an attacker reportedly killed a 2-year-old boy and seriously injured a 9-year-old on I-75 on June 17, 2021, in Detroit.
The 2-year-old boy was
pronounced dead at a nearby hospital
and the other minor was in serious condition.
Their names were not revealed.
Detroit Acting Police Chief James White said investigators were looking for a silver Chrysler 300 without license plates.
Michigan State Police are leading the investigation, and "the homicide section of the Detroit Police Department is here to support and assist in this investigation and to help get this monster off the street," according to White.
He asked that anyone with information contact the police.
"This is without a doubt the worst day of the life of this family,"
said White, "I can't even understand what they must be going through. It's absolutely horrible."
Possible reasons for this incident have not yet been revealed.

The incident in Detroit comes nearly a month after 6-year-old Aiden Leos was shot and killed on a highway in Southern California.
The suspect, Marcus Anthony Eriz, 24, pointed a gun at another driver days after the killing, authorities said Wednesday.
