Cologne / Nuremberg - A month ago a man found two old oil paintings on a motorway rest area in Middle Franconia.

It is now clear who the artists are who created the works.

Still, the police are puzzled.

She now hopes that witnesses can clear up the whole matter.

Baroque painting found in dumpster at motorway service station

A 64-year-old man discovered the pictures on Tuesday, May 18, at the “Ohrbach Ost” motorway service station (Ansbach district *) on the A7 in Middle Franconia, the police in Cologne and Middle Franconia * write unanimously in their press releases.

The man had found the oil paintings, which are estimated to be over 350 years old, in a dumpster.

He took the pictures with him and drove with them to Cologne.

There he handed them over to the police.

"After an initial assessment by an expert, both works are likely to be original works," said the investigators.

Both works date from the Baroque and were painted by great artists.

The painting “Portrait of a Boy” comes from the Rembrandt pupil Samuel van Hoogstraten (1627-1678).

The second painting was made by the Italian artist Pietro Belloti (1627-1700).

It shows him himself and is called “Self-Portrait Laughing”.

Police are hoping for clues from the population

A month later, the Cologne police decided to publish the photos of the works.

They are looking for witnesses who can help solve the case.

“Who knows the paintings shown and / or knows how they got into the dumpster at the rest area?
