New York - Sana
The United Nations General Assembly unanimously approved, without a vote, a resolution extending the term of António Guterres as Secretary-General of the United Nations for five years.
On the eighth of this month, the UN Security Council approved Guterres, 72, assuming the United Nations Secretariat for a second term.
The Associated Press quoted the President of the United Nations General Assembly Volkan Bozkir as saying today, “I announce the appointment of Antonio Guterres as Secretary-General of the United Nations for a second term from January 1, 2022 to December 31, 2026.
After he was sworn in, Guterres said in a speech that "our greatest challenge and at the same time our greatest opportunity is to use this crisis to turn the tide of the situation...transition to a world that draws lessons that promotes a just, green and sustainable recovery and shows the path through increased and effective international cooperation to respond to global problems."
He added that overcoming this stage will require a real effort to strengthen what is working and courage to draw lessons from what is not working.. This requires that we adopt measures of prevention and preparedness, and this is a top priority for the international system.
It is worth noting that Guterres has held the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations since January 1, 2017.
