A city in Croatia sells houses for the ridiculous price of 13 cents.

The future owners would have to meet a number of criteria for this.

The Croatian city of Legrad now wants to try what many cities in Italy have already done *: For just

one Croatian kuna (the equivalent of 13 cents)

vacant houses and construction sites are to be sold.

But what sounds tempting at first should be carefully considered.

Some of the “properties” are demolished semi-ruins without doors or windows.

Sometimes walls are missing or mold has moved in.

All of the 19 houses need a complete renovation.

The city wants to grant each new owner a subsidy of the equivalent of 3,333 euros.

Croatian city attracts with cheap houses

70 years ago, Legrad was the second largest city in what is now Croatia.

Since the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy around 100 years ago, however, the place has been struggling with a steadily declining population.

Today only about 2,250 live there.

Due to the poor transport connections, there is more and more

rural

exodus, as Mayor Ivan Sabolic reports to the Reuters news agency.

That should now be prevented.

That is why the city also subsidizes people who want to buy a private house with 20 percent of the purchase price or up to 35,000 kuna (the equivalent of 4,664 euros).

Croatia: houses at a bargain price - under some conditions

And the plan seems to be working: 17 houses have already been sold, as Sabolic explains. However, if you want to purchase one of the inexpensive buildings, you have to meet a few criteria - one of which is that you are under 40 years of age and can prove that you are

solvent

. In addition, interested parties must undertake

to stay

for

at least 15 years

. "After a few media reports about our campaign, we received inquiries about houses from very distant places such as Russia, Ukraine, Turkey, Argentina or Colombia," reports Sabolic, according to Reuters. Immigration to Croatia turns out to be complex, so that the houses are currently only sold to locals.
