How to survive the summer heat: Doctor gives important tips and explains the "golden rules"

- For many people, extreme heat leads to headaches, dizziness and circulatory problems, explains Professor Dr.

Hans Ulrich Kreider-Stempfle, Chief Physician for Internal Medicine I at the Asklepios City Clinic in Bad Tölz.

"The heat mainly affects older patients and patients with heart failure or coronary heart disease," explains Kreider-Stempfle.

He advises patients with a reduced pumping function of the heart to avoid any exertion and to stay mainly in cool rooms or in the shade.

This is particularly important in the coming days: For Bavaria, the German Weather Service issued an urgent warming before increased heat load.

A lack of fluids often causes symptoms.

Since the feeling of thirst decreases, especially in older people, one of the “golden rules” of Kreider-Stempfle is: “Drink over thirst” so that dehydration does not occur.

The first thing you notice when you are dehydrated is your head.

Patients then complain of headache, dizziness, tiredness and general malaise.

But a clouding of consciousness can also be a serious consequence of the heat.

In addition, valuable minerals that the body needs for its metabolic processes are lost through sweating.

The doctor warns that small children, as well as the elderly and the sick, need to be particularly careful during this time of year.

He gives these tips for the correct use of heat:

O Wear airy clothing and light-colored headgear in the sun.

O Stay mainly in cool rooms.

O Avoid unfamiliar physical exertion.

O Do not expose yourself to the blazing sun.

O Treat yourself to an extended lunch break, take a siesta.

O Prefer light foods such as vegetables, fish or fruit.

O Drink more than usual, but not alcohol or drinks that are too cold.

O Do not drink too much at once, because you can only use 500 to 800 ml per hour.

It is good to drink a glass of water every hour throughout the day, even if you are not yet thirsty.

O Never leave children or pets in a parked car.
