An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale struck southern Alaska, USA.
Reuters quoted the US Geological Survey as saying that the quake struck at a depth of 10 km, 226 km south of Sand Point, at latitude 53.3022 degrees north and longitude 160,326 degrees west.
Alaska is located above the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area where tectonic plates meet, and the friction of which leads to strong seismic and volcanic activity.
