After more and more children had cut themselves on tiles, the Peitinger wave pool was cleared on Thursday.

He had no other choice, says Mayor Peter Ostenrieder.

At least there is a ray of hope.

Peiting

- Many bathers had prepared themselves and put their children on extra bathing shoes for the visit to the Peiting open-air swimming pool. The problem that joints had become porous and that more and more children were cutting themselves on tiles was well known. Signs were also put up in the bathroom, says Mayor Peter Ostenrieder, who was still there on Thursday morning and met with a lot of understanding from the visitors.

Nevertheless, a few hours later, he “had no choice but to have the bathroom cleared,” says Ostenrieder.

He relaxed about the excitement of individual people on social media about the shortcomings.

At around 4 p.m., however, the police called him, "carefully pointing out that I could be accused of premeditation if something else happened," said Ostenrieder.

Wellenfreibad Peiting: lawyer advised an immediate evacuation

Schongau's chief of police, Herbert Kieweg, does not believe that legal details were answered when the call was made.

However, a colleague spoke to Ostenrieder to discuss the situation.

“You keep exchanging ideas.” The officials had learned about the situation in the open-air wave pool through the newspaper.

Whether it is closed or not is entirely up to the operator.

Ostenrieder took the call as an opportunity to consult with employees and a lawyer who clearly advised the store to be closed immediately.

The matter is known to the police and therefore "official", explains Ostenrieder.

“We have to react to that officially.” According to Ostenrieder, the lawyer advised against the idea of staying open at least on Thursday until normal closure.

Lifeguards and staff cleared the area.

The police were not involved, contrary to a previous report.

She only got an idea of the situation on site.

Peiting wave swimming pool: Partial closure not possible

So now the bathroom is closed for the time being. Among other things, Ostenrieder is often asked why not only the affected area was blocked. "Anyone who wants to go into the wave pool has to go through the non-swimmer area," explains Ostenrieder. So you can't just block a part. Of course there is another pool above - but “to replace the tile joints in the non-swimmer pool, we have to drain the water. Anyone who then slides over the parapet in the upper pool falls four meters down onto a stone - that would be really negligent ”.

The problem that children cut themselves on tiles is not completely new (adult feet are too big for the small bump to be injured): “Something like this has been happening for 47 years - since the bathroom was there,” says Ostenrieder, and it is coming in every bathroom.

"However, this has now, in the past and this week, accumulated, we recognized that and therefore decided on Wednesday to close the bathroom for repair work," says Ostenrieder.

Wellenfreibad Peiting: Repair work should start soon

During the Corona closure, renovations were carried out and individual tiles were also replaced, "as is always done" - but not in the area in which children are now injured.

You couldn't see that the joints had become porous here - you can't see it now either.

At least there is a ray of hope: the repair work could start on Monday.

The community had pulled out all the stops on Thursday evening to get the necessary material faster - the closure was actually planned for July.

Community workers should now be trained by the responsible company and then be able to get started quickly.

The repair is expected to take two weeks.
