The next major construction site is announced at the Holzkirchen motorway junction: work on the construction of the new bridge over the A8 will begin there on Monday.

Holzkirchen

- There is space for eight lanes below it, and four lanes are possible on it: The new bridge at the Holzkirchen motorway junction is longer and wider than its predecessor.

After more than three years of preparation and planning, work will begin on Monday, June 21, 2021.

This year a temporary bridge will be raised so that the old bridge can be demolished in winter.

The new bridge should be ready in 2023.

42 years are enough, the old bridge at the Holzkirchen junction (built in 1979) has had its day.

Nine years ago the Autobahn Directorate South Bavaria, which now operates as the “Niederlassung Südbayern” of the newly founded Autobahn GmbH of the federal government, had the pillars stabilized again.

But now the building is so decrepit that renovation is no longer worthwhile.

Make space for the eight-lane construction of the A8

The federal government is investing around 21 million euros in a new bridge structure that takes into account the steadily growing volume of traffic in the region.

The span will be increased to accommodate the medium-term eight-lane expansion of the A 8 without any problems.

The widening is more important for Holzkirchen and the flow of traffic in the direction of Tegernsee: The new bridge takes on the recently completed four-lane expansion of the B 318 and removes the bottleneck at the transition from the B 318 to the A 8, which should please commuters and day-trippers.

However: The additional tracks are not brought into focus immediately. "For the time being, there will only be one lane each," says Josef Seebacher, branch spokesman for Autobahn GmbH. The four-lane opening will only be implemented once the eight-lane A 8 expansion has been completed. And that can still take some time on the section between Hofoldinger Forst and Holzkirchen. "There are sections on the Salzburg autobahn between Munich and Inntal where expansion appears to be more urgent," says Seebacher. For the Holzkirchen section, the preliminary draft for the plan approval procedure is still being worked on.

The eight-lane expansion is a long way off, the new bridge is now being tackled.

In the run-up, the Autobahn GmbH has already cleared trees, "and relocated dormice," as Seebacher reports.

As of Monday, the executing company Mayerhofer (Simbach am Inn) will start setting up the large construction site.

"Two bridges are actually being built," says Seebacher, "one for each lane." If the first renovations are due at some point, one bridge can remain open.

"We get more flexibility."

The temporary bridge should be in place by the end of the year

The first goal is to lift a temporary bridge directly north of the old structure. "Static calculations are still in progress," says the motorway spokesman. The provisional facility should be passable by the end of the year, and traffic will then have to accept a little dangling. After the demolition of the old bridge, the abutments for the longer and wider successor will be set in 2022 and the ramps will be adjusted. The temporary bridge is then superfluous and will be dismantled. The year 2023 is scheduled for the installation of the second, gap-free, second bridge.

During the two-year construction period, drivers have to repeatedly adjust to narrow lanes and speed restrictions.

According to Seebacher, there will also be full closures while parts of the bridge are being lifted in or during the demolition work: “Nobody is allowed to drive through under suspended loads.” The plan is to put the closing hours at night to keep the disabilities within limits.
