The Berlin CDU has chosen its top candidate for the election to the House of Representatives on September 26th.
At a state party conference in Berlin-Neukölln, the delegates voted 92.7 percent for state chairman Kai Wegner as a candidate for the office of governing mayor.
The 48-year-old received 254 of 281 votes cast.
20 delegates voted against him, seven abstained.
In front of the 280 delegates, Wegner attacked the incumbent senate made up of the SPD, the Greens and the Left and announced improvements for the administration and the police.
"After five years of red-red-green, Berlin is a tied giant," said Wegner.
The city systematically remains below its potential.
The CDU wants to make the city administration a model for the republic over the next five years.
Wegner's most prominent opponent is the former Federal Minister for Family Affairs, Franziska Giffey, who is supposed to take the post in the town hall for the SPD.
In the polls so far, the Greens are slightly ahead, they have nominated former state chairwoman Bettina Jarasch.
Culture Senator Klaus Lederer stands for the left.
