Iran has elected a new president - Ibrahim Raisi, the head of the judiciary and an ally of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, has won the Islamic Republic presidential election, Iranian television officially reported this morning (Saturday).
The other three candidates in the race recognized Raisi's victory and congratulated him on his victory.
Raissi's main rival was former Central Bank Governor Abed Nasser Hamati, the only moderate candidate left in the race who has been reduced to just four candidates in recent days, including two other candidates from the conservative-hawk camp.
He warned that the victory of the head of the justice system would lead to further sanctions by the West.
During the campaign, he expressed readiness for direct talks with the United States if it would support "positive coexistence" with the Islamic Republic.
