Where are Austria's right wingers heading?

Wiener Neustadt (dpa) - The right-wing FPÖ in Austria will in future be headed by Herbert Kickl.

The delegates at an extraordinary federal party conference elected the 52-year-old on Saturday in Wiener Neustadt with 88.2 percent as the new party leader.

The FPÖ parliamentary group leader succeeds Norbert Hofer at the head of the right-wing populists.

Hofer had resigned from office a few weeks ago due to ongoing attacks by Kickl.

The decision in favor of Kickl is considered to be an important point of departure.

This dwindles the FPÖ's prospects of a possible new coalition with the conservative ÖVP at the federal level.

Kickl is one of the harshest critics of Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz.

In particular, Kickl considers the corona measures to be completely excessive.
