The otherwise rather rare opportunity to use the thermal baths as a training location has been taken by the rescue dog team of the Pastetten volunteer fire brigade.

Pastetten / Erding - After the wave pool and Hotel Victory, the Erding thermal baths will open the next areas of the thermal baths on Friday, June 25th. But the wellness facility was closed for months. The otherwise rather rare opportunity to use the thermal baths as a training location was taken by the rescue dog team of the Pastetten volunteer fire brigade on two Saturdays.

“We asked, and since there was construction work going on in the thermal baths at the time, we were allowed to use almost the entire area except for the wave pool and the hotel,” reports relay leader Carmen Adam.

Eleven dog handlers arrived with 13 animals that were supposed to save people as area and rubble dogs or so-called mantrailers.

The future teams of dogs and humans trained for about seven hours each.

It was also an advantage that the pools were without water, because the relay team had a huge area at their disposal.

Even the sauna areas and the slide paradise could be used for training.

"We also had a person hidden in a slide who had to be found," describes Adam.

She also says that the practice days took place under difficult conditions, as it was very warm in the buildings.

For the dog relay, the opportunity to exercise was a stroke of luck, because Corona had already thwarted the training plans twice.

“Last year we weren't able to train for several months,” the relay leader regrets.

However, the exercises are important in order to work towards the exams and then the first assignments.

After a trial year, the dog squad has been officially affiliated to the Pastetten fire department since January 2021 (we reported).

It currently consists of eleven volunteer dog handlers.

They have been able to complete 900 hours of training with their 13 protégés since March.

This is only possible with a lot of diligence: Currently, we train up to four times a week for several hours each time.

That is of course a high stake, and some people throw in the towel after a while.

But there are always dog owners who are new.

"We are very happy to have offspring," says Adam.

Just recently, the friendly rescue dog team from Aschheim, which is currently very well positioned, was able to find two interested parties.

The relay leader cannot say when the Pastetten dogs can be alerted for the first time during an operation.

The aim is autumn, but it could also be next spring.

Until then, dogs and their owners still have to complete a whole series of training hours, not only with practical exercises on site, there are also online courses on legal topics to be mastered.

The fact that a lot of heart and soul has to flow into this is not only due to the time invested, but also to the fact that the teams finance themselves predominantly out of their own pockets.
