The Maschinenring from Oberzolling offers a special way of fighting the European corn borer: by drone.

Soon, maize fields will be flown over the entire district.

Oberzolling / Niederambach

- The European corn borer is a real nuisance in some regions.

The harmful butterfly has already arrived in the Freising district and is causing considerable damage to maize fields in some cases.

The moth lays its eggs on the maize plants and the larvae that hatch then eat their way along the stalk.

As a result, the maize plants usually bend over and the crop failure is between 20 and 50 percent.

Parasitic wasp balls are brought out over the fields

A variant of pest control is the application of poison, which in turn does not go down so well with future customers. The natural solution is more elegant and also non-toxic when balls with the parasitic wasp Trichogramma brassicae are spread over the fields. These insects are the natural enemies of the European corn borer and settle on the eggs. "We don't want to use insecticides," says Barbara Lechner from Maschinenring, "and the biological solution brings at least the same success."

The Maschinenring based in Oberzolling works with Martin and Johannes Schredl from Niederambach near Moosburg to offer the service in five districts (Freising, Erding, Ebersberg, Dachau and Pfaffenhofen).

The drones automatically fly over the maize fields of the farmers involved.

Around 25 to 30 corn-growing companies have already booked the drone flight and receive around a third of the costs as a state subsidy.

This means that biological pest control is no more expensive than using toxins.

The first flights are imminent

The first air mission against the European corn borer is now imminent.

In a maize field from last year, the Schredl family set up a light trap that registers and displays the flight movements of the European corn borer.

Then the point has come to fly the already digitized fields.

It is expected that up to 100 hectares will be processed every day.

For Rainer Pflügler, Managing Director of the Maschinenring Freising, the offer is the classic example of the facility system: “The farmers help each other.

Someone buys the technology, continues to educate himself and then offers it to everyone. "

Good to know

Farmers can still join the drone flights with parasitic wasps at short notice, but it is too late for a government subsidy.
