Budapest (AP) - Hungary's right-wing national prime minister Viktor Orban wants to restrict the power of the EU parliament.

The national parliaments of the EU states should be given the right to stop legislative processes in the EU parliament if, in their opinion, they could violate the national areas of competence, Orban demanded in a speech in Budapest on Saturday.

"The EU Parliament has proven to be a dead end when it comes to criteria for European democracy," Orban emphasized.

According to the model of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, the national parliaments should be allowed to send representatives to the EU Parliament in his opinion.

Orban spoke on the occasion of "Independence Day", on which the Hungarians celebrate the departure of the last Soviet soldier on June 19, 1991.

The EU is under Article 7 proceedings against Hungary because of deficits in the rule of law. Budapest is also defending itself before the European Court of Justice (ECJ) against the new Brussels mechanism for reducing EU funds in the event of certain rule-of-law violations.
