The government will convene this morning (Sunday) for a first working meeting, during which it is expected to approve the establishment of a state commission of inquiry into the Meron disaster that occurred 52 days ago on the day of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai's celebration, in which 45 people perished.

The position of the previous government, and especially that of the heads of the ultra-Orthodox parties, was against the establishment of this commission of inquiry, but the recommendations for its establishment were included in the coalition agreements of the Bennett-Lapid government under a special clause.

The proposal to establish a commission of inquiry was brought to the approval of the government by the Minister of Defense and the blue-and-white chairman, Bnei Gantz, and the Minister of Finance and the chairman of Yisrael Beiteinu, Avigdor Lieberman.

In addition, the government is expected to approve at the meeting the bylaws of government work, appointments in the foreign service that were stuck for a long time during the Netanyahu-Ganz government, and to approve the extension of the tenure of Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi.

"This is a joint effort by me and the Minister of Defense on an important issue that will do justice to the families and prevent the next disaster in the State of Israel," Lieberman wrote, adding - "We have committed and kept."

Ganz wrote that this is a "moral debt to families and no less important is an important step designed to prevent such tragic events in the future. I thank the Minister of Finance Lieberman for supporting the proposal and assisting in its promotion."

Before the cabinet meeting, a forum of coalition party leaders will convene, which will probably deal with explosive issues on the agenda, such as the Citizenship Law - the Family Reunification Law, which allows the state to prevent Palestinians who marry Israelis from living with them within the country.
