Thousands of Brazilians demonstrated across the country yesterday (Saturday) against President Jair Bolsonaro and his role in tackling the corona plague, hours after the death toll from the country's virus crossed half a million, the lowest in the United States alone.

The demonstrators waved flags and posters that read "Bolsonaro will come out, an administration of hunger and unemployment," and "500,000 dead, it's his fault."

Experts warn that the situation in the country may worsen, due to the delay in vaccinations against the corona, as well as the administration's treatment, which refuses to take the necessary measures, including maintaining social distance and wearing masks.

Data from the Ministry of Health show that only 11 percent of Brazilians are fully vaccinated, while 29 percent received the first dose.

Researchers warn that the coming winter is expected to bring with it to the southern hemisphere new variants of the virus, which could lead to many more deaths, even if the rate of vaccines rises.

500,800 deaths have been recorded in Brazil since the outbreak, and more than 17.8 million people have been infected with the virus.

Over the past week, about 2,000 deaths a day have been recorded in Brazil as a result of the virus.

"I think we're going to get to 700 or 800,000 deaths before we see the effects of the vaccines," said Gonzalo and Cena, a former senior at one of the Brazilian health companies.

"We are experiencing the arrival of the new variants and the Indian variant will send us into a spin."

Vesina sharply criticized Bolsonaro for his treatment of the plague, including the lack of a coordinated national response, and his skepticism about vaccines, closures and masking.

The number of victims is expected to continue to rise.

"We are protesting against the genocidal Bolsonaro government, which has not bought vaccines and has done nothing to care for its people in the past year," said 36-year-old Aline Ravello, who demonstrated at a mall in the capital, Brasilia.

According to the country's media, anti-government demonstrations have been held in all 26 countries in Brazil.

"Brazil is experiencing a major setback," said Isabella Golgor, a female student who joined a demonstration in Rio de Janeiro.

"The country was once a model country for vaccines in the world. We have recognized institutions, but today we are in a sad state."
