The German shepherd, one of the two presidential dogs, died "peacefully at home" at the age of 13, the Biden family announced this Saturday in an emotional statement in which they pay tribute to him.

The White House announced this Saturday the death of Champ, one of the president's dogs, Joe Biden, and the first lady, Jill Biden.

The German shepherd died at the age of 13 "peacefully at home", as announced in a statement.

"Our hearts are heavy because our beloved German Shepherd, Champ, passed away peacefully at home. He

was our loyal and beloved companion for the past 13 years

and was adored by the entire Biden family," they note.

The two presidential dogs had been transferred from the White House to Delaware, where the couple have their private residence, following an attack by 3-year-old Major on a member of presidential security.

In the emotional statement, the president recalls that although Champ's strength "diminished in his last months," he immediately "got up, wagged his tail and caressed them" when they entered the room where he was staying.

"Wherever we were, he wanted to be, and everything instantly improved when he was by our side," she adds.

The Biden family added in the statement that Champ liked to curl up at their feet in front of the fire at the end of the day, join them in a comforting presence at meetings or sunbathe on the White House lawn.

"In his youth, he was happiest chasing golf balls on the Naval Observatory's front lawn or chasing our grandchildren as they ran through our backyard in Delaware. In our happiest times and in our most troubled days, he was there with us. , sensitive to each of our feelings and emotions.

We love our sweet and good boy and we will always miss him, "he concludes.

Champ was acquired by the president and first lady after the 2008 presidential election in which the former Delaware senator became vice president of Barack Obama's administration, and Major was adopted in 2018.

Before Biden's inauguration as president, on January 20, the couple announced that they would move into the White House with their dogs and that they would bring a cat.

Major is the first dog out of a kennel to ever live in the White House, and both he and Champ, who Biden acquired from a White House kennel, have often been seen playing on the mansion lawn in the last weeks.
