Fairy tales are often about rich and poor, hunger and riches. Food usually plays an important role ("the sweet porridge"). Today the shortage is seldom an issue, and when it does, the plot is shifted to other regions or epochs, for example in the children's novel "Mick Mangodieb". Today, however, there is a lot of discussion about healthy and climate-correct nutrition. We are all challenged to find a way between enjoyment and conscience. In addition, non-fiction books for children about modern food production and cookbooks on the various nutritional principles are published non-stop.
As a child, I loved the children's cookery program "Lirum Larum Löffelstiel".
Oh man, I was jealous of the three children who were allowed to cook on TV.
The spiral-bound cookbook that went with it was my Bible, but unfortunately it no longer exists.
But a cookbook, today?
Welcome to the stone age.
Every dish can be found in 33 variants on the internet.
Nevertheless, a cookbook has advantages: You can make notes in it, spill it - and the battery is never empty.
The following books address the subject of nutrition - and everything related to it - in different ways.
What they have in common is the joy of eating.
Is anything missing?

I've read that these days children are less likely to be taken out shopping.
In fact, a friend said he had no ingredients when he tried to cook in his first apartment.
He had never shopped before.
This cannot happen to your children with this book.
What's going on here?
Cooking is easy.
But shopping is for the smart.
Like Pit and Pelle.
The two of them go off again for dinner.
But then it takes a little longer and the items were not directly on the shopping list.
Phew
The parents stay calm.
Only a small sigh escapes them.
A great everyday adventure with many surprising twists and turns, brilliantly illustrated by Susanne Göhlich.
She makes every book better.
Best time to read:
To awaken the thirst for adventure.
Recommended age:
From five years.

Even if the children on this cover are a little gloomy about the pancake cake: Behind this pale cover picture hides a beautiful cookbook for younger children.
It offers a simple introduction to cooking, including equipment.
What's going on here?
Sandwich, pasta, soda, poor knights: a good selection of recipes, not too complicated or dangerous and, above all, not too healthy.
Lots of things are great for a party.
Instead of photos, drawings illustrate the dishes and work steps.
The pictures create a relaxed atmosphere - and cooking with children is known to be not always relaxed ...

Before shopping.

The nice thing about comics is that anything is possible.
Just climb up on the wall to the neighbor and poke vegetables?
No problem for Yasmina, the great main character of this culinary crime story.
Instead of text, you can delve into the dynamic sequence of images and study the images carefully.
Great for everyone who doesn't like to read.
What's going on here?
Yasmina lives with her father above the roofs of the city - almost.
Because a mysterious woman with a roof garden still lives above them.
Cooking is Yasmina's passion, which is why she doesn't fall for the strange food that the whole world suddenly crams into itself.
Behind this, of course, is a nasty speculator who did not expect Yasmina.

No, I am not a vegetarian and I have no interest in taking away the joy of meat dishes from children in any way.
But it tastes even better when you have a good feeling about all the ingredients.
The book is graphically well structured, with beautiful illustrations that by no means draw horror pictures of sad animals.
From the age of eight, however, I find such a complex topic a bit sporty and would rather recommend it for young people.
What's going on here?
Text and pictures explain what makes meat consumption questionable without raising the moral forefinger.
The tenor: meat is eaten all over the world, that's not bad.
But you should take a closer look at what you eat, how the animals are doing and what consequences our meat consumption has on the climate - and thus also for us humans.
With the help of clear maps and graphics, children and young people can form an opinion and decide how to deal with it.
With index and references.

From eight years and for everyone.

If children question the meaty menu, this cookbook is the perfect choice.
I don't understand the recommended age of eight, after all, they're not teenagers.
In addition, the recipes are a bit more demanding and more for older tastes.
What's going on here?
Great entry-level cookbook with detailed explanations of nutrition, spices and utensils as well as many photos of the individual cooking steps.
Modern, fresh recipes for a balanced vegetarian diet.
A book that can accompany you for a long time.

From eight years, older if possible.
