The victory of Iran's head of the judiciary, Ibrahim Raisi, in the presidential election today (Saturday) led to a resumption of calls to investigate his involvement in the execution of thousands of regime opponents in the 1980s.

According to the human rights organization Amnesty International, he was one of four judges who oversaw the death penalty given to some 5,000 prisoners at the end of the war with Iraq.

"The fact that Ibrahim Raisi was elected president instead of being questioned about crimes against humanity for murder, forced disappearances and torture is a sad reminder of the prevailing immunity in Iran," the organization's secretary general, Agnes Kalamard, said in a statement issued after the conservative cleric's victory was announced. She admitted to the same mass executions, and Raisi never addressed allegations of his involvement in them, even though his supporters denied it,

Amnesty even claiming that he granted immunity to regime officials and security forces accused of killing protesters during the 2019 protest.

The 60-year-old Raisi was sanctioned by the United States for being involved in human rights abuses.

He supports the continuation of the nuclear talks, but the victory of the extremist cleric may make it difficult for the Biden administration, which has promised to put the fight against human rights violations at the center of its agenda.

At the same time, allies of Iran, from Syria and Hezbollah to Hamas and Islamic Jihad, have sent their congratulations to Raisi, who will take office in August.

Russia has praised President Vladimir Putin, who hopes "for the further development of fruitful bilateral cooperation between the two countries."

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the United Arab Emirates also sent congratulations to the president-elect.
