Hama-Sana
The Hama Water Resources Directorate released a new batch of water stored in the Maharda Dam in the Al-Ghab and Tar Al-Ula Al-Asharnah irrigation networks, with a flow of 8 cubic meters per second, with the aim of supporting farmers by expanding their intensified summer crops.
Engineer Fadi Abbas, director of water resources in Hama, said in a statement to SANA reporter today that this batch of water comes in response to the farmers’ demands and to reduce the burdens and material expenses incurred by them as a result of cultivating the summer seasons in terms of securing water at the lowest possible costs in light of the high prices of fuel needed to operate water pumps.
He pointed out that with the release of this batch of water stored in the Maharda Dam, he took into account the amount of water available in the dam and ensured the maintenance of a safe and stable situation in it so that its strategic stock did not fall below 80 million cubic meters.
Eng. Abbas explained that the directorate carries out periodic and permanent maintenance work for all dams in the governorate and for the gates and valves, including the water equipment in the Mahardah dam to protect the coolants of the Mahardah power station and ensure that they do not stop, in addition to isolating the main irrigation channels in the Al-Ghab Plain and the places of bottlenecks where the estuaries meet with the main drains.
It is noteworthy that the Orontes River is facing a shortage of water this year due to the drought wave and the drop in rainfall, which led to a decrease in its water level.
