The magic of isolation

2021-06-24T13:00:33.142Z

Hidden in front of the Peñagolosa natural park, in Castellón, these villas constitute the definitive work of the Dutch sculptor Xander Spronken. Two temples of concrete, wood and wrought iron where design is at the service of light and views.

  • 1After searching Switzerland, Sardinia or Sicily, the sculptor Xander Spronken found in the mountainous environment of Les Useres, in Castellón, the ideal place to build his definitive work.

Two ecological houses (they work with solar panels) and with the appearance of a naked Greek temple in which everything is at the service of views and light.

To do this, a diaphanous structure with a ground floor and a mezzanine opens to the outside, reducing the architectural gesture to a minimum: wooden beams from the piles of the port of Rotterdam, iron and glass carpentry, and large concrete pillars.

In it you can see the simple distribution of the ground floor and loft.

  • 2In the complex, everything is designed by the artist —from the door handles to the kitchen cabinets— and his wrought iron work stands out.

Spanning 310 square meters of living space, these villas - each with a kitchen, living room, two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a pool - are now owned by Joris Dassen, Spronken's nephew.

In the image, the large kitchen has a wood-burning oven and, like the rest of the building, faces the outside.

  • 3Dassen and his family spend a few seasons there and rent it out during vacation periods. “I have known the project from the beginning.

His dream was to build his biggest sculpture.

I saw the possibility of investing, but also of enjoying it ourselves ”, says Dassen.

He also bought the surrounding land to protect "the magic of the place, which lies in its isolation."

  • 6Each of the two modules of Casa Spronken has its own pool.

The views of the houses open to the Peñagolosa natural park, towards which the house is oriented, which favors the absence of light pollution.
