London (CNN) -

Death unites the living, they say.

The last time we saw William and Harry together was at their grandfather's funeral, and it will be at the unveiling next month of a memorial to their mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, when we see them reunited once more.

The brothers commissioned the statue from British sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley, whose portrait of the queen appears on all British coins, to "enable all who visit Kensington Palace to remember and celebrate her life and legacy."

It has been given a privileged position in the palace's Sunken Garden, which Diana enjoyed when she lived there.

That quote was from 2017 ... in the days when princes still issued joint statements.

No one could predict how their relationship would break down to the point where they now live on separate continents and barely speak to each other.

  • Prince Harry has had "unproductive" conversations with William and Carlos since the Oprah interview.

Before the presentation there will be a lot of talk about the body language between the two, how Meghan could not attend and what all this may or may not mean for the monarchy. But these are two men who know the media better than anyone, having grown up in the shadow of some of the most famous women in the world.

Its position is unenviable.

They blame the media for their mother's death.

However, they have to allow cameras to enter to capture the moment the statue is revealed for the first time.

That's because they also accept, and actually celebrate, their mother's legacy and public role.

She was not just a celebrity, but for many years she was a high-ranking royal who leveraged her profile for her philanthropic endeavors, in particular for her awareness work on AIDS and the danger of abandoned landmines.

In that 2017 joint statement, the princes said that "it is clear that the importance of his work continues to be felt by many in the UK and around the world, even 20 years after his death."

The brothers view flowers, photos and other memorabilia left as a tribute to Princess Diana near the Sunken Garden of Kensington Palace in London on August 30, 2017.

Almost 24 years have passed since Diana's death, and although the brothers' relationship is not what it was, they still agree on one thing: the importance of keeping her memory alive.

That's what the July 1 presentation is about.

The princes will use their profiles to draw attention to the event, before using their experience in front of the cameras to keep the attention focused on Diana, who would have been her 60th birthday.

  • Princess Diana will have a commemorative plaque in the London apartment she lived in before marrying Prince Charles

Since Diana's death in 1997, a number of memorials have been erected throughout London, including the White Garden at Kensington Palace and the nearby Diana Memorial Playground, as well as the Diana Memorial Fountain in Hyde Park and the Diana Memorial. Walk in the Palace of Saint James.

Before Prince Philip's funeral, much was written about the tension between them, and they managed to dissipate that tension by entering the church separately and leaving it chatting.

Nobody expected it, and that did not divert attention from the event.

There is nothing these siblings can be taught about public perception, and they will find a way to keep the attention away from them at the inauguration and focused on their mother.

That doesn't mean there won't be tension between them, just don't expect to see it.
