Unlike the latest polls, outgoing PS president Marie-Guite Dufay was given the lead on Sunday evening, according to initial estimates.
It collected around 26% of the vote, ahead of the head of the RN list, Julien Odoul, who collected around 24%.
This is therefore a small surprise, and good news for the Socialists.
The outgoing president would even do better than her score in 2015, where she finished third with 22.99% of the vote, before winning in the second round, in particular thanks to the deferral of votes from environmentalists.

The Greens, whose list of Stéphanie Modde came fifth (9.9%), should once again line up behind Marie-Guite Dufay.
Discussions will also take place between the PS and LREM, while Denis Thuriot's list came fourth (12.7%).
The head of the RN list, Julien Odoul, has suffered repeated controversies and resentments from his camp.
