The high temperatures draw people to the water.

However, swimming accidents occur again at the weekend.

Several girls are missing on the Rhine and Elbe.

Berlin (dpa) - There were also fatal swimming accidents at quarry ponds and river banks at the weekend.

In Mannheim, for example, an eight-year-old girl drowned.

A rescue diver found the child under the surface of a lake late Saturday evening.

It died a little later in a clinic.

In Schleswig-Holstein, emergency services were looking for a missing girl in the Elbe until late at night.

The nine-year-old disappeared early Saturday evening in the water at the bathing area near Kollmar near Elmshorn.

According to the police, she was carried away by the suction.

There is still no trace of two 13 and 14 year old girls missing in the Rhine near Duisburg.

The young people had bathed in the Rhine with a 17-year-old friend on Wednesday and were suddenly pulled under water and driven off.

The 17-year-old was found shortly afterwards, but died.

The other two girls have so far disappeared.

A spokesman for the Duisburg police said on Sunday that there was no further evidence of the girls.

A large-scale search for them with divers and helicopters was suspended on Thursday.

The water police continue to patrol and search the banks, as a spokesman said on Saturday.

Despite the tragic bathing accident, the emergency services continued to observe many swimmers in the Rhine on the following days.

A number of families had populated the sandy bays and banks in search of refreshment and let their children into the water, the spokesman said.

It is shocking how little effect the fate of the three girls apparently has on people.

Many expose themselves to deadly dangers despite constant warnings.

Many ignored the fact that there is often a strong suction effect even in shallow water and near the shore areas.

The police had already assessed the chance of finding the missing 13- and 14-year-olds as extremely low on Thursday.

The current in the Rhine is too powerful for even good swimmers to fight against it.

The authorities on the Lower Rhine and in the neighboring Netherlands are therefore also alerted if the bodies were aborted there and washed ashore.

But it is also possible that they appeared near the site of the accident at Alsumer Steig.

In Brandenburg, where there are a particularly large number of lakes, the lack of swimming lessons in the corona pandemic has increased the number of non-swimmers, according to the German Life-Saving Society (DLRG).

"A large number of non-swimmers are currently running down our doors and want to take courses, which is overwhelming," said the DLRG spokesman for the country.

The volunteer workers would reach their limits.

All rescue organizations and swimming schools tried to compensate for this, but that would be difficult because of limited capacities in the swimming pools and open air pools.
