Organized in a context of health crisis, these departmental elections are held at the same time as the regional ones [link to the regional direct]. In total, 795,400 voters are called to the polls for this double ballot. The 887 polling stations in the 21 cantons of Essonne will be open on June 20 and 27 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. 77 pairs present themselves. To qualify for the second round, each pair, necessarily composed of a man and a woman, must have obtained at least 12.5% of the votes of the registered voters.
The right and the center had taken over the department in 2015 in a context of blue wave coming to sanction the action of the government of François Hollande (PS), in the continuity of the municipal elections of 2014. The right is presented under the banner "Union makes Essonne ”, the departmental majority with François Durovray (LR), outgoing president of the departmental assembly and candidate for his succession in the canton of Vigneux-sur-Seine. It can ogle the cantons of Evry-Courcouronnes, Massy or Palaiseau, three cities owned by mayors who support its candidates, or even who are in the running.
Today, the left comes together with the ecologists, the PCF, Generation. s, the PRG (center left), Génération · s, Génération écologie and the Republican and Socialist Left (GRS), Public square in 20 out of 21 cantons, and with LFI in a few. “With Essonne Naturally”, she hopes to return to the helm by keeping the six cantons of 2015 and by taking back the cantons lost six years ago, as she recovered certain cities in the municipal elections of 2020. The exception to this union is the canton of Evry-Courcouronnes, which it holds. While the outgoing do not represent themselves, it is not less than three left-wing lists that are embarking on it, with LFI, EELV and PS candidates.
The National Rally again presents candidates in the 21 cantons. In 2015, Marine Le Pen's party arrived in the second round in eight cantons: Arpajon, Corbeil-Essonnes, Épinay-sous-Sénart, Étampes, Évry, Mennecy, Ris-Orangis and Savigny-sur-Orge. But did not obtain any elected to the departmental assembly. The RN aims to remain in more than half of the cantons, and does not just “play the referees” between the right and the left, but wants to win several seats.
LREM has only four pairs in the whole of the department: in Athis-Mons, Massy, Savigny-sur-Orge and Vigneux-sur-Seine. The presidential party is launching for the first time in the departmental elections. It will therefore be, after the municipal elections (where only one mayor was elected with this label in Essonne, Paolo de Carvalho in Dourdan, but who presents himself with the departmental majority in the canton), a new life-size test on his forces present. locally.
At 5 p.m., depending on the prefecture, participation was 19.84% (8.76% at noon).
In 2015, it was 47.42% in the first round of departmental elections, and 46.44% in the second.
This time, the polls anticipate a much stronger abstention, between 60 and 65%.
During the campaign, the candidates multiplied the calls for proxies and had to explain "the importance of these elections which concern everyday life".
The forces present in the 21 cantons of Essonne
Canton of Arpajon.
In 2015, the right-wing candidates Dominique Bougraud (UDI) and Alexandre Touzet (without label) invested by the departmental majority had seized the canton. Candidates for their succession, they are opposed this year to a united left represented by the pair Sarah Krimi (PS) - Michel Collet (Génération. S) and to the duo of the National Rally composed of Evelyne Djema (RN) and Georges Dulong (RN) ).
Canton of Athis-Mons.
Winners in the municipal elections of 2020, the mayor of Athis-Mons Jean-Jacques Grousseau (PS) and his partner Marion Beillard (DVG) hope to change the canton, which passed to the right in 2015. In front of them, the outgoing departmental councilor Pascal Picard (LR). Christine Rodier, former mayor (LR) of Athis having chosen not to stand for re-election, she leaves her place to her daughter, Aline Durand (LR). Two other pairs, Christine Aubaud and Dominique Leuliet (RN) on one side and Jean de Dieu Batina and Souela Hamdi (LREM) on the other will try to get out of the game.
Canton of Brétigny-sur-Orge.
Vice-presidents of the departmental majority, Sophie Rigault (LR) and Nicolas Méary (UDI) are candidates to keep the canton that they took from the left in 2015. They will face the pair they had beaten six years ago. years, Michel Pouzol (Génération. s) and Isabelle Catrain (EELV), who intend to take their revenge. The RN will also be there with Isabelle Girard and Hervé Sibillat.
Canton of Corbeil-Essonnes
. The left has high hopes of retaking this canton which had escaped it in 2015 thanks to divisions that led to its elimination in the first round. The National Front then took the opportunity to access the second round. This time, the left is united behind Fadila Chourfi (EELV) and Alexandre Maquestiau (DVG), facing the outgoing Caroline Varin (LR) and Karl Dirat (SE), the mayor of Villabé. The National Rally is still present with Nancy Demette and Laurent Stillen. A fourth pair presents itself with Azdine Ouïs, former deputy of Jean-Pierre Bechter (LR), ex-mayor of Corbeil, and Perrine Delacroix (SE).
Canton of Dourdan.
The outgoing departmental councilor Dominique Echaroux (without label) having decided not to run for a new mandate, his partner, the mayor of Angervilliers Dany Boyer, went on campaign under the banner of the departmental majority “Union makes Essonne” with the only LREM mayor of the department, the new mayor of Dourdan, Paolo de Carvalho.
They will be opposed to the united left represented by Olivier Bouton, opposition municipal councilor in Dourdan, and the feminist and union activist, Claire Serre-Combe (PCF).
The National Gathering also aligns a pair, Gilbert Mousnier and Jacqueline Perez.
Canton of Draveil.
Five pairs compete to succeed Aurélie Gros and Georges Tron. The now ex-mayor of Draveil is currently imprisoned after his conviction for rape and sexual assault in February 2021. The departmental majority duo is led by Anne-Marie Jourdanneau-Fort (SE), 2nd deputy in Draveil, and Yann Pétel ( LR), mayor of Saint-Germain-lès-Corbeil. Canton of Épinay-sous-Sénart.
The two outgoing councilors, Damien Allouch (PS), mayor of Épinay-sous-Sénart (who delighted the municipality in June 2020 on the Georges Pujals DVD) and Annick Dischbein (PS) represent themselves with a status of favorites against the majority departmental incarnated by Caroline Brillaux and Riad Hatik and the RN candidates Evelyne Diet and Thiebauld Vega.
Canton of Etampes.
The outgoing departmental councilors, the mayor of Cerny Marie-Claire Chambaret (without label) and Guy Crosnier (without label) are running for a new mandate, still under the banner of the departmental majority of François Durovray (LR). On the left, the opposition municipal councilor in Étampes Mathieu Hillaire (LFI) joined forces with communist Michèle Kauffer to try to dethrone the duo which had been elected with 65.5% of the vote in 2015. Finally, the National Rally who climbed to the second round six years ago will be represented by Annick Boursicot-Duport and Guy Gabler.
Canton of Evry-Courcouronnes.
Currently in the hands of the left, it will be the most disputed, with six pairs in contention. The outgoing advisers do not represent themselves and the left is in very dispersed order with no less than three lists competing against each other in a context of great tensions. Last weekend, violence took place between candidates and activist from two lists. On the right, two pairs are in the running. Both will side with the current majority. Divisions that could benefit the National Rally which says it is sure to access the second round.
Canton of Gif-sur-Yvette.
Since 2004, in this canton, the right seems unbeatable. Outgoing advisers Laure Darcos (LR) and Michel Bournat (LR) are therefore rather favorites. Especially since LREM, which has been achieving its best scores in this sector since 2017 (except for the municipal elections), does not present a candidate. The duo of the departmental majority will have to face the duo of the left and environmentalists composed of Serge Audinet and Sonia Roisin and that of RN Laura Colin and Wilson Roux.
Canton of Longjumeau.
The pair Sandrine Gelot, mayor (LR) of Longjumeau, and Stéphane Bazile, mayor (LR) of Saulx-les-Chartreux (Claude Pons not running for a new mandate in the department) are favorites in this canton held by the right since 2001. Canton of Mennecy.
Three pairs are in the running: under the banner of the departmental majority, outgoing councilor Patrick Imbert (LR) is seeking a new mandate.
He is now teaming up with Anne Pioffet, deputy mayor of Mennecy.
The duo will be opposed to the 100% Itteville leftist pair made up of the mayor François Parolini and his deputy Laëtitia Colonna.
The National Rally, which obtained 30.5% of the vote in 2015, presents two new candidates, Sami Khodja and Adeline Védie.
Canton of Palaiseau.
The right has dreamed of it since it conquered the city of Palaiseau in 2015 and kept it with the re-election in 2020 of Grégoire de Lasteyrie (LR), regional candidate on the list of Valérie Pécresse. But the left is resisting with the mayor of Orsay, David Ros (PS), also spokesperson for the opposition group Rassemblement de la gauche and ecologists in the outgoing departmental council and probable candidate for the presidency of the department for the left. Stéphane Raffalli (PS), mayor of Ris-Orangis and outgoing councilor represents himself with a new partner, Tiphaine Valdeyron. They are favorites against the departmental majority represented by Laurence Budelot, the mayor of Vert-le-Petit, and Alexandre Courbera, in charge of elections and federations at the UDI, and against the RN, well anchored locally, defended by the candidates Brigitte Manuceau and Claude Stillen, whose twin Laurent is competing in the canton of Corbeil.
Canton of Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois.
Frédéric Petitta, outgoing departmental councilor (DVG) intends to keep this canton, made up of 4 municipalities, on the left.
His former partner, Marjolaine Rauze (PCF) not wishing to represent himself, it is his former first deputy in the city of Morsang-sur-Orge, Marie-Claire Arasa who succeeds him.
But his defeat in the municipal elections against Marianne Duranton (UDI) could weaken the pair.

Canton of Savigny-sur-Orge.

Facing them, the duo of the union of the left and environmentalists has beaten the campaign for several weeks. Olivier Thomas, mayor (DVG) of Marcoussis, and Latifa Naji, municipal councilor in Les Ulis, intend to take back this canton lost in 2015. Canton of Vigneux-sur-Seine.
