Iran's only nuclear power plant is undergoing a temporary shutdown, a government energy company official told the state television on Sunday.

The source, Rolamli Rahshanimhar, said on a talk show that the Bushehr reactor was shut down yesterday for "three or four days".

He added that there may be power outages.

He did not elaborate further, but this is the first time that Iran has reported an emergency shutdown at a reactor in Bushehr, in the south of the country.

It was launched in 2011, with the assistance of Russia.

Last March, a senior Iranian nuclear energy agency official warned that the reactor could stop working because Tehran could not purchase parts and equipment from Russia due to sanctions imposed by the United States on its 2018 banking sector.
