For weeks, the security authorities in Belgium have been looking for a soldier who has been accused of right-wing extremism and terrorist plans.

Now the man's body has apparently been found.

Brussels (dpa) - After a four-week manhunt for the terrorist soldier Jürgen Conings, a body was found in East Belgium.

The newspaper "Het Belang van Limburg" referred on Sunday to the Mayor of Maaseik, Johan Tollenaere.

He noticed a pungent smell of putrefaction while riding a mountain bike and discovered the body near Dilserbos.

A forensic doctor is on the way.

There was initially no official confirmation that it was Conings.

The Belga news agency reported, however, that a "good source" had confirmed this.

Tollenaere was initially unavailable for the German Press Agency.

The alleged right-wing extremist Conings disappeared at the end of May after death threats against Belgium's most prominent virologist, very close to where the body was found at the Hoge Kempen National Park in the border triangle of Belgium-Germany-Netherlands.

At the time, it was feared that he was planning an attack on state structures or on several public figures.

Thereupon an unprecedented search operation with hundreds of soldiers and partly also helicopters was started, but without success.

According to the authorities, a "suspicious mechanism", possibly an explosive device, was found in a car that is said to belong to the wanted person.

There were also heavy weapons in the car.

The man is being investigated for attempted murder and illegal gun possession in a terrorist context.
