Ten people, including nine children, were killed in a collision of more than 15 cars near Greenville, Alabama.
"It is likely that Storm Claudette, which is sweeping a number of US states, was the cause of the accident or a waterslide," Wayne Garlock, a coroner in Butler County, told AFP.
According to Garlock, eight children were killed in a vehicle belonging to a school receiving victims of abuse and neglect, and a father and his infant daughter who were in another car died after they were taken to a hospital in the area.
In a separate incident, the mayor of Tuscaloosa, in the same state, Cape Tyner, confirmed on Facebook that two other people had died as Storm Claudette passed.
The Tuscaloosa news website quoted a member of Tyner's office as saying that a 24-year-old man and his three-year-old son were killed in their home by a tree falling on it.
It is noteworthy that Storm Claudette accompanied by heavy rain and floods swept several areas of the American coast, including Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama today.
Continuous torrential rains caused water levels to rise in Birmingham and Tuscaloosa in Alabama, while meteorologists warned of mudslides as torrential rain continued across the southwestern and western coastal regions of Mexico.
