The “Tutzing helps in the Mediterranean” fundraising campaign raised more than 76,000 euros.

But it is also an occasion for criticism of politics.

“We have to set an example,” said Martin Lehmann-Dannert from the Ecumenical Support Group.

The Catholic pastor Peter Brummer spoke of a success story: As reported, the “Tutzing helps in the Mediterranean” fundraising campaign brought in EUR 76,549.

Those responsible reported on the distribution to six organizations over the weekend.

Four of them were represented with their own actors: the sea rescue "SOS Mediterrannée", the volunteer doctors from "Medical Volunteers International" as well as "Lesvos Solidarity" and "Stand by me Lesvos", who look after apartments and educational opportunities on the Greek island of Lesbos .

Everyone thanked them warmly and spoke impressively about their work.

Tutzing's mayor Marlene Greinwald also took the action as an occasion for criticism of the great politics.

76,000 euros donations: 700 people can be equipped

The money could be used to equip 700 people - or an on-board pharmacy with medication for five months, said nurse Gerald Karl from SOS Mediterrannée.

The doctor Maria Möller, who works for Medical Volunteers International, reported that she had “experienced panic attacks like never before” in camps.

Constantinos Gianacacos, head of the evangelical migration center in the Greek House in Munich, complained about an “active deterrent policy” in Greece.

Greinwald praised her local council for unanimously advocating joining the “Cities Safe Haven” alliance in 2020.

Because such activities by municipalities are controversial, especially when it comes to taking in refugees.

The Federal Ministry of the Interior insists on a European solution, in the Bundestag there have already been calls to municipalities to leave their "asylum policy on their own".

Tutzing is the only district municipality in the "Cities Safe Haven" alliance

Apart from Tutzing, no other municipality in the Starnberg district has joined the alliance.

There is, however, an alliance “Safe havens in the districts of Starnberg and Weilheim”.

District Administrator Stefan Frey came to Tutzing, but did not comment publicly.

You know about his support, said Greinwald and called on the municipalities to put pressure on the legislature.

It is too far away: "We are close to people," she said.

If all municipalities in Germany and Europe were to get involved, the refugee crisis would no longer be an issue, explained Greinwald.

"The mayor surprised me positively," commented Ernst von der Locht from the circle of supporters. Chairwoman Claudia Steinke reported on donations from Berg, Pöcking and the Würmtal. Four and five-digit large donations are noteworthy, the rest is divided into around 320 donations averaging more than 100 euros. Donations cannot be made everywhere, said Lehmann-Dannert. The jury included Pastor Beate Frankenberger, Pastor Brummer, CSU councilor Florian Schotter, the ex-ship's captain, Claus-Peter Reisch, and Claudia Steinke, known as a sea rescue worker.

She named three pillars: sea rescue, medical help on site, local projects.

There are now good contacts with a number of organizations.

The group of supporters wants to continue the work and also include Tutzing's youth.

He relies on the planned youth advisory board.

"Tutzing cannot save the world," concluded Pastor Brummer: "But we don't have to stand idly by."
